Our Program

A Typical Student Day Begins…

An earlier start-time than traditional schools.
More time means more learning. Our students need to make tremendous gains in reading and math, and other subjects, in order to be college-ready.

The CEO hugs every student as they arrive or walk down the hall.
We believe it’s important for students to know we are glad to see them and are excited about what they will accomplish each day at Laurel Oaks.

Breakfast, Lunch, and Snack
Laurel Oaks provides a free, healthy breakfast, lunch, and snacks for all students.

From Kindergarten to 3rd grade, we place a strong emphasis on literacy. Our youngest students move from “learning to read” to “reading to learn.” Our older students transition from comprehension to deep textual analysis to make them strong learners in high school, college, and beyond.

We devote 90 minutes to math every day.  This means 1,800 minutes per month and 16,200 minutes a year. Math procedures and problem-solving skills are vital to the overall development of critical thinking skills, and unlock access to compelling future educational pursuits like physics and engineering.

Lunchtime is like observing an orchestra. Everyone knows where to be, where to go, and what to do. We maintain tight processes around everything from lunch lines for food distribution to entering and exiting bench tables. We have talk time with our friends and get ready for the afternoon’s lessons.

After lunch

Physical Education
Laurel Oaks provides physical education ranging from once a week to daily. We believe it is important for students to have the opportunity to move, collaborate, compete, and have fun.

Subject Area Classes
Laurel Oaks teaches a range of courses in history, science, foreign language, and the arts.

Spanish, Music, & Art
Starting in Kindergarten, Spanish, music, and art classes are incorporated into the school week. Starting with the 2nd grade, we provide music classes as a core component of the weekly schedule. Weekly classes may include Spanish, music, art, theater, technology, general music education and more. We value music as a disciplined and creative pursuit that will benefit students throughout their lives.

Tutoring and Enrichment
We prepare our scholars in one-on-one tutor sessions with a reading and math interventionist to ensure our students are proficient in all subjects. Specific courses vary, but include book club, phonics, foreign language, art, music, dance, computers, and sports. We also provide after school tutoring to assist our students who are struggling in various subject areas.

Laurel Oaks has structured dismissal procedures that allow a smooth transition from classroom to the sidewalk to the buses.
