Our Story

Laurel Oaks Charter School began with the philosophy that a great education should never come at a price. From this, Laurel Oaks was built to provide students an academically challenging education and STRONG character values to prepare them for the top high schools in our city. We are tuition-free and do not require any testing to attend.

In Baton Rouge, Louisiana, we are fortunate to have two outstanding universities, Louisiana State University (LSU) and Southern A & M University.  Nearly 50% of adult residents in our northern neighborhoods have less than a high school education and less than 10% have a college education. It was because of these statistics, that dedicated individuals took it upon themselves to lead, found, and establish a school to provide a better education for students and families most at risk to falling repeatedly into these statistics.

Elementary literacy predicts college performance. Laurel Oaks was designed to provide students an education that provides the fundamentals in reading, English Language Arts, mathematics, social studies, science, foreign language, art, and music. Laurel Oaks grew from a mission statement to detailed vision, and to a comprehensive charter application that was submitted to the Louisiana Department of Education for review in the summer of 2015.

On December 2, 2015, the Louisiana Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE) voted to approve the Laurel Oaks Charter. Reviewers noted in our charter application that our educational program had a comprehensive approach to “assessing student progress and using data to adjust instruction” and “[a] documented demand and support for the school among members of the community.” It was evident that Laurel Oaks had a strong educational plan and strong need for all students, no matter their starting point, the academic and character education to go to college.

On August 15, 2016, Laurel Oaks opened its doors to its inaugural Kindergarten class. Beginning with the 2019-2020 school year, we will be open to Pre-K through 3rd grade students, preparing them for the competitive high schools of Baton Rouge, prestigious universities, and life beyond.
